Full Text Markup of Selected Dunhuang Manuscripts

This is the website for the Dunhuang Manuscript Fulltext Digitization Project at Dharma Drum Institute of Liberal Arts The project, funded by the Chung-hwa Institute of Buddhist Studies 中華佛學研究所, took place between 2014 and 2017.

The aim of the project was to produce high-end digital transcriptions of selected Dunhuang Manuscripts from the Chan tradition. We used TEI to encode a number of Mss witnesses for early Chan related texts. In the process of markup we explored issues in the markup and digital representation of character variants, e.g. the robustness of the support for CJK characters in the Unicode Extention B, C and D ranges or how to cope with non-unicode character variants found in the manuscripts. Next to the character variation issue we dealt with transcription issues relevant for all languages, such as omissions, transpositions, scribal errors, damaged sections, later additions, etc. One aim was to arrive at a set of best practices for high-end digital editions of Dunhuang material.

The fundamental result of the project is a digital archive which consists of the TEI files, a customized schema, documentation and markup-manual, gaiji character images, and other metadata. The material is hosted at Zenodo (DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.1133490). Another output of the project is a 3 Volume print edition that is based on the TEI/XML:
Marcus Bingenheimer 馬德偉, Chang Po-Yung 張伯雍 (eds.): Four Early Chan Texts from Dunhuang – A TEI-based Edition 早期禪宗文獻四部 —— 以TEI標記重訂敦煌寫卷:楞伽師資記,傳法寶紀,修心要論,觀心論. Taipei: Shin Wen Feng 新文豐. Vol. 1: Facsimiles and Diplomatic Transcription 摹寫版 (ISBN: 978-957-17-2274-0), Vol. 2: Parallel, Punctuated and Annotated Edition 對照與點注版 (ISBN: 978-957-17-2275-7), Vol. 3: Calligraphy Practice 抄經版 (ISBN: 978-957-17-2276-4).
The books can be ordered at the 新文豐 website. The introduction in English is available here [pdf].

The transcriptions have been made from digital images of the manuscripts. Most of these are available through the International Dunhuang Project (IDP) platform hosted at the British Library. A Memorandum of Understanding between the Chung-hwa Institute of Buddhist Studies and the International Dunhuang Project resulted in the digitization of some important Mss, e.g. Stein 2054 or Stein 1210.

Below we offer HTML views of the data, which juxtapose a more diplomatic view of the text with a more normalized and punctuated view. They are transformations of the XML/TEI source files available at Zenodo, which includes the stylesheets used for the transformation. The HTML views depend on browser settings, installed fonts etc. at the user end. For citation and reference we recommend the print view cited above. The digital facsimiles of the source texts are available at the International Dunhuang Project, for the Stein Collection, and at the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, for the Pelliot Collection.
