Full Text Markup of Selected Dunhuang Manuscripts

This is the website for the Dunhuang Manuscript Fulltext Digitization Project at Dharma Drum Institute of Liberal Arts The project is funded by the Chung-hwa Institute of Buddhist Studies 中華佛學研究所 and takes place between 2014 and 2017.

The aim of the project is to produce high-end digital transcriptions of selected Dunhuang Manuscripts. We use TEI to encode a number of Mss witnesses for early Chan related texts. In the process of markup we explore issues in the markup and digital representation of character variants. How robust is the current support for CJK characters in the Unicode Extention B, C and D ranges? How to cope with non-unicode character variants found in the manuscripts? Next to the character variation issue we deal with transcription issues relevant for all languages, such as omissions, transpositions, scribal errors, damaged sections, later additions, etc. One aim is to arrive at a set of best practices for high-end digital editions of Dunhuang material.

The markup allows for different outputs. We encode the information in a way that makes it possible to retrieve a diplomatic transcription that is as close to the manuscript as currently feasible. Simultaneously, we encode information that allows for a regularized output, in which character variation is minimized. This regularized view of the text allows for searches across documents and future work towards the automated collation of witnesses. The regularized view also includes modern punctuation.

All transcriptions have been made from digital images of the manuscripts. These are available through the International Dunhuang Project (IDP). A Memorandum of Understanding between the Chung-hwa Institute of Buddhist Studies and the International Dunhuang Project resulted in the digitization of some important Mss, e.g. Stein 2054 or Stein 1210.

On this website all manuscript transcriptions will be available as a downloadable archive file in TEI/XML intended for use by digital librarians and archivists. Digital facsimiles of the source text are available at the International Dunhuang Project, for the Stein Collection, and at the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, for the Pelliot Collection. This project will also result in a print edition, that will juxtapose the digital facsimiles of the Mss with the diplomatic and regularized transcriptions.
